Abstract
Kleinhovia hospita is a plant that widely distributed in Indonesia, especially in Borneo and Sulawesi. This big tree is well known by local as traditional medicine that cures various diseases. There are a lot kind of phytosterols in every plant, research shows that K. hospita has a phytosterol called ß-sitosterol. ß-sitosterol discovered to have antimicrobial effect on various bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. S. aureus normally lived on body surface and can caused skin disease if forms colonization under the skin. This research aims to investigate the antimicrobial effect of methanol extract of K. hospita on S. aureus. This research is an experimental laboratory research and being held in Faculty Of Medicine, Indonesia Catholic University of Atma Jaya . K. hospita is being obtained from a tree that grows in Samarinda, East Borneo. The antimicrobial effect is determined using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). This research shows that MIC is on 75 mg/mL and MBC is on 75 mg/mL. Further research is expected to investigate the antimicrobial effect with more spectrum of bacteri.
