Abstract
The pervasiveness of wireless telecommunication technology has prompted the rapid development of various applications, one of the most prominent is Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). WSN is a cluster of sensing nodes consisting of sensors, computation devices, actuators and power devices, which collectively observe a particular environment. The observation data is subsequently sent wirelessly to a base station, where it is further analyzed. WSN is widely used for military and defense purposes, but due to the rapid decrease of computing devices prices, it is now progressively developed for non-military puiposes such as weather, logistics, and environmental monitoring. The wireless data communication processes in WSN require lowpower transmitters and receivers, as WSN nodes provide limited power whilst a long lifetime is compulsory.
Transmitters and receivers based on ZigBee protocols are suitable for use in WSN nodes as they operate on low-power, support sufficiently high data rates and are able to connect up to 255 devices per network. In this research we develop a software-based simulation model for ZigBee physical layer protocol and analyze the performance of the protocol for various noise power. The simulated ZigBee physical layer is based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard and the channel used is Additive White Gaussian Channels. Several simulations are conducted and the results show the effects of varying noise power on the bit error rate. The simulation results can be used to build a WSN prototype using ZigBee-based communication devices.
