Abstract
Background: Elderly has high risk of having dementia and insomnia. Those two conditions can occur concurrently and they have negative effects on each other, thus worsening conditions on the patients. Objective: To study the correlation between dementia and insomnia and dementia determinant factors among elderly at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia II. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 103 elderly chosen using random sampling between March 2013 and December 2014 at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia II, Jakarta. Questionnaires were used to collect information on characteristics, physical conditions, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Data were analyzed using Chi Square and logistic regression. Results: 103 elderly who were observed in this research are averagely 70.8 years old, with 52.4% female, 82.5% married, 61.2% have had children, 76.7% Muslims, 49.5% Javanese, 38.8% with primary school education, 65% have acute disease, 57.3% have chronic disease, 47.6% have good psychosocial conditions, 83.5% with dementia and 42.7% with insomnia. Logistic regression analyze shows a non-significant correlation between dementia and insomnia, elderly with dementia has 2,8 times higher risk (OR=2,826) to get insomnia. Multivariate test result shows significant correlation between dementia and education level (no education & primary school education). Elderly with no education have 14,9 times (OR=14,924) and elderly with primary school education have 8,5 times (OR=8,510) the risk to have dementia.
