Abstract
Background
Attention and concentration are needed by students in studying various disciplines and sciences that are taught primarily for medical school students who require high concentration. To support this requirement, it is believed that glucose content in the beverage or food can help to keep or even improve the concentration of the students. Physical activity is one of the other factors that can affect a person's level of concentration. Among young people, especially medical students, often forget the importance of physical activity due to the demands of the medical student to become a competent physician.
Objective
The research objective was to determine the effectiveness of glucose consumption and physical activity to the attention among students who enrolled in Faculty of Medicine Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
Method
This study was a cross-sectional analytical study paired with subjects totaling 26 people who will undergo 4 intervention in different days. The first day, the subjects were given 23,7mg saccharin solution, the second day was given 50g of glucose solution, the subject of the third day in a treadmill machine, the fourth day doing sprints on the treadmill and then given a 50g glucose solution. Stroop test was conducted before and after the intervention in each group.
Result
Saccharin group compared to the glucose group showed a significant difference to Stroop test (p <0.05). In saccharin group compared with treadmill group was not found significant differences to Stroop test (p> 0.05). Then the saccharin group compared with glucose + treadmill group obtained a significant difference to the Stroop test (p <0.05)
Conclusion
Glucose consumption and physical activity improved attention among students who enrolled in Faculty of Medicine Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
