Isi artikelMegaloblastic anemia refers to a pathologic process characterized by delay in matura¬tion of the nucleus of red blood cell precursors and continuing development of the cytoplasm. Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency are common causes of megaloblastic anemia. Both vitamins are cofactors for the enzyme methionine synthase that converted methyltetrahydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate, which is necessary for some enzymes of DNA synthesis. Vitamin B 12 and folate deficiency can cause of bio¬chemical defect appears to be a fault in DNA synthesis. This may be due to a lesion at some point in pyrimidine synthesis. The result of this nuclear-cytoplasmic dissociation is production of cells that are larger than normal.
