Isi artikelFew would dispute that contemporary American journalism is in a crisis. Between the concentration of the media industry (including cross-ownership and integration within non-media corporations), shrinking news budgets in the interest of greater profits (or, since 2007, economic survival) and declining audiences for serious news, what may be called the ‘ “classical” paradigm’ of journalism (p. 147) appears to be under relentless assault. Moreover, even though the institution of the newspaper is by no means coterminous with journalism itself, the challenges facing the survival of newspapers as a medium add to the sense of crisis.
