Abstract
Background. Cholestasis is a condition in which bile cannot be drained into the small intestine, thus causing many abnormalities, including hypercholesterolemia.
Objectives. To investigate the effect of acute and chronic extrahepatic cholestasis on the elevation of total blood serum cholesterol levels in Male Sprague-Dawley Rats.
Methods. This is a cross-sectional study on in vivo experiments within 4 groups of 6 samples each, labeled as the acute control group, acute ligation group, chronic control group and chronic ligation group. Samples in the acute groups are terminated on the 7th day and samples in the chronic groups on the 21st day. The experiments were done by laparotomy, ductus choledochus ligation, termination of the samples, blood sampling and serum separation, and testing the total blood serum cholesterol with the corresponding reagent and the Microlab 300 analyzer.
Results and Conclusions. Results show a significant elevation of total blood serum cholesterol levels among samples in the acute ligation group as compared to the acute control group (p=0.004) and among samples in the chronic ligation group as compared tothe chronic control group (p=0.02). There is a significant lowering of total blood serum cholesterol levels among samples in the acute ligation group as compared to the chronic ligation group (p=0.004). It is concluded that the presence of acute and chronic extrahepatic cholestasis does affect the elevation of total blood serum cholesterol levels, but there is a lowering of total blood serum cholesterol levels along the transition from acute to chronic conditions.
Suggestions. Proper handling of samples as not to affect the qualities, increasing the amount of samples and variables for higher accuracy.
