In his introduction to this fine ensemble of work from established and upcoming scholars, editor Michael Bailey reminds us of an often cited comment from the inspiration behind this collection, James Curran, who wrote in 1991 that media history, though it provided the genesis for the discipline of media studies, had been subsequently marginalized and neglected, like an unwanted relative. To those of us who plough this particular academic furrow, this is especially unfortunate as, to quote from another founder member of the so-called ‘Westminster School’, ‘evidence drawn from history, even if it is from the very recent past, is the only evidence we have against which to test sociological theories’ (Garnham, 2000: 17). This book is a fascinating and important reminder of the truth of that statement.
