Nowadays EFL learners in Indonesia, especially university students, are expected to be able to communicate in English. Those who can only speak in Indonesian or the local language will not be able to compete in the global community. A breakthrough of a learning process is, therefore, absolutely desirable for the learners. The present study is aimed at exploring the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the Mata Kuliah Umum Bahasa Inggris (MKU BING). It also looks at the students’ perceptions toward the MKU BING program on how it could develop their English language skills. By using a project-based learning, the writer developed five projects in two types of classroom programs, on-site and on-line classrooms. The projects were carried out by 26 students from Japanese Language Study Program at UNJ. This 16-week program showed that the students were highly motivated in participating in the projects. The score of students’ project portfolios were mostly increasing from one project to another. The students mostly perceived the projects as positive learning activities which could increase their learning motivation, critical thinking and real-academic-life learning experience. Although some of the students felt really exhausted and had difficulties in following the projects instructions every week, they wrote in their project diaries and questionnaire that they obtained much new information related to the content of the program. They also said that their English was getting better, and that they were exposed in the four language skills. |
