Isi artikelPrevious research on lecture rate has focused only on comprehension. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of lecture rate on both comprehension and perceived topic importance. Undergraduates either listened to an audiotaped recording or listened to and watched a videotaped recording of someone lecturing at three different rates. They then answered comprehension questions and rated the importance of the topic. Contrary to similar research in advertising and social psychology, students in the slowest lecture rate group rated the topic as more important and scored higher on the comprehension test than students in both faster rate groups. Implications of these findings are discussed in terms of lecture learning.
