Isi artikelSubcutaneous heparin, which does not cross the placenta and therefore has no adverse effects on the fetus, is the most commonly used mode of thromboprophylaxis in pregnancy in the UK.’ Heparin use in pregnancy is however associated with some risk for the mother. The hazards of heparin include bleeding, skin reactions, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, and osteoporosis.’ Osteoporosis, characterized by a decreased mass (bone density less than 2.5 standard deviations below the mean for young adults) of normally mineralized bone is the most common serious side-effect of long-term heparin use. It is largely the risk of osteoporosis which prevents more widespread use of subcutaneous heparin in the antenatal period.
