Background: In the middle age (45-59 years) and elderly (over 60 years) there is a change in the physical as well as mental and a regression of the body functions as a result of aging. The older a person, then that person will be more susceptible to disease because of the bad lifestyle, which is obesity. Until now, the health problems due to excess nutrients, is still a problem in the world. Indonesia, as a developing country, is also experiencing similar problems. At the middle age and elderly age, lifestyle changes as a result of aging and decreased activity. Due to the influence of globalization, middle age and elderly prefer fast food, which generally contain high levels of carbohydrates, protein, and high fat and low in fiber. In addition, the regression in body functions and technological advances make the physical activity of middle age and elderly decrease. Besides diet and physical activity, other factor such as stress (emotional mental disorders) also affects the nutritional status of middle age and elderly. With these considerations, we are going to search for factors that related to the incidence of obesity in middle age and elderly age. Methodology: The study population was the entire lecturers and employees of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biotechnology Atma Jaya Catholic University at the age of middle age and elderly (more than 45 years) amounted to 61 respondents. This study used a cross-sectional design and the instruments are a questionnaire, height and weight measurements. Data analysis using SPSS version 20 with the Chi-square test statistic at 95% confidence level. Results: Of the 61 respondents (42 lecturers and 19 employees) are known as 24 (39.3%) of respondents have a normal BMI status and 37 (60.7%) of respondents have a Obesity and Overweight BMI status. If viewed from the characteristics of the respondents, the majority of respondents were male, amounted to 38 (62.3%) respondents and 23 (37.7%) female respondents. A total of 11 (18.0%) of respondents were not married, and 50 (82.0%) of the respondents were married.
Based on Chi Square test bivariate analysis was obtained: 1. Gender (p-value (0.007) <0.05), marital status (p-value (0.018) <0.05) and the stress status (p-value (0.031) <0.05) are associated with the incidence of obesity at lecturer and employees of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biotechnology Atma Jaya Catholic University, where the men, married and not stress prone to have obesity and overweight. 2. Based on the characteristics of the respondents, which consists of the environment (living at home with whom), employment status, and socioeconomic (spending a month) are not associated with the incidence of obesity at lecturer and employees of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biotechnology Atma Jaya Catholic University. 3. Based on the health behavior and participation in health insurance, which consists of health insurance, check up in year, check up be borne by whom, activity status, dietary status of fruit and vegetables, and body image are not associated with the incidence of obesity at lecturer and employees of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biotechnology Atma Jaya Catholic University. 4. Based on health status, which consists of a number of diseases, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cholesterol are not associated with the incidence of obesity at lecturer and employees of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biotechnology Atma Jaya Catholic University. |
