Abstract
Street vended foods have become a common culture in the Indonesian society, however its unhygienic preparation has deemed to cause many incidents of bacterial contamination for its consumers. The Indonesia Body of Food and Drugs Surveillance (BPOM RI) stated that the highest incidence of food poisoning occurs in school children. One of the causes of food poisoning is the bacteria Vibrio cholerae which
manifests as lethal diarrhea in the form of the disease cholera. This research paper aims to identify the presence of Vibrio cholerae in foods and beverages sold in front of elementary schools in Pluit District, North Jakarta. The samples obtained must be prepared by the vendor, not factory produced. There was a total of 38 samples from 7
elementary schools, and each sample was diluted until 10-3. From all the isolates that grew, 30 produced positive suspect Vibrio cholerae colonies on the TCBS agar, however when performed the oxidase test, they all tested negative. This contradicts with Vibrio cholerae’s oxidase positive nature. Therefore it is concluded that no Vibrio cholerae bacteria were found in the food and beverages that are sold in front of elementary schools in Pluit District, North Jakarta.
