Developing hypermedia programs has become a popular topic among computer scientists, educational researchers, and instructional technologists. Hypermedia provide a flexible means for users to organize and manage multimedia information in a way that meets their special needs. However, further research and technical improvement are needed, and theoretical issues must be addressed if its instructional applications are to be clarified. The purposes of this article are: (a) to examine the desired functional features of hypermedia; (b) to describe instructional applications of hypermedia; and (c) to discuss research issues and technical improvements for the instructional applications of hypermedia.
