This special issue of Educational Technology is devoted to past, present, and future educational applications of computer telecommunications. When editor Lawrence Lipsitz and I first discussed the possibility of such a project, we were unsure about what term we should use to refer to this innovation. Telecommunications alone seemed too broad, since we were interested primarily in telecommunications involving computers and educators. Larry eventually suggested Educational Computing Telecommunications, and at the risk of being accused of adding to the jargon in an already jargon-cursed discipline, we settled on this terminology.
