Isi artikel
Initial studies implicating infectious agents with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were conducted in the early 1970s, tracing (by electron microscope) paramyxovirus-like nucleocapsid particles within the endothelial cells of lupus patients. 1,2 These observations resulted in subsequent attempts to examine viral antibody titres in the sera of SLE patients. Indeed, elevated titre levels were detected against multiple viruses,3~4 rather than to specific ones. Yet, these antibodies could have evolved due to an immune response towards cellular proteins, rendering them non-specific.
