Abstract
Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is a fruit plant with seasonal characteristic, which only flowering and fruiting at certain times. Mango needs 3-4 months of dry season before flowering, it has been known that its flowering season between July-August, and harvest around September-November. This characteristic is influenced by micro climate and plant endogen factor. Paclobutrazol application aimed to inhibit vegetative growth stimulates the emergence of flower bud followed by KNO3 as breaking dormant compound.
Experiment was conducted to find optimum amount of paclobutrazol concentration followed by KNO3 application which induces flowering in mango out of its season. The experiment was arranged using completely randomized design 2 factorial with three replications. Interaction between paclobutrazol 1.0 g active ingredient/tree with KNO3 40 g/l (P1K4) sprayed 30 days after paclobutrazol application showed the largest number of generative bud, first time flowering and the highest total chlorophyl content in induction phase. It was found that PIK4 treatment is the most effective in induced flowering in mango outside its season. Total chlorophyl content (mg/l) in all treatments achieved its highest result in induction phase, followed by initiation, differentiation and finally vegetative phase. The highest total chlorophyl content in induction phase found at P1K4. while initiation and differentiation phase at P0.5K4. Paclobutrazol treatment can fasten four months earlier flowering. Observation of axis diameter decreases, where induction phase has the largest axis, followed by initiation and finally differentiation, while the length and width of panicle increase, where differentiation phase bigger than the initiation. None of terminal bud from control treatment developed into generative bud.
