It is now more than 30 years since the tragic outbreak of foetal malformation caused by thalidomide forced its withdrawal from general sale and altered the attitude of a whole generation of doctors and their patients to drug prescribing in pregnancy, and to the pre-launch testing and post-launch surveillance of novel drugs. Although less widely publicised, the neuropathic side effects of thalidomide, which were responsible for its failure to gain a US licence, were also soon apparent with widespread use1,2.
