Abstract
Acute appendicitis is the most common condition requiring emergency abdominal surgery, and is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain. Because it has many similarities with other diseases, acute appendicitis dubbed as the masquerader and it has a high risk of misdiagnosis with approximately 15-20%. Therefore, besides from the history, physical examination, and laboratory tests, radiological examination is also required in order to visualize the appendix directly so that the patient can be addressed prior to the complications that can result in death. Radiological examinations that are discussed in this scientific paper are two-dimensional gray scale abdominal ultrasound and abdominal CT-scan with contrast for both imaging modalities is most commonly used to diagnose acute appendicitis and are widely available in various hospitals. This literature study will discuss the comparison of the sensitivity and specificity of two-dimensional gray scale abdominal ultrasound and abdominal CT-scan with contrast in diagnosing acute appendicitis, and when each of these tools should be used.
