This paper describes an empirically developed scale of comprehension questions which serves as the basis for a language arts curriculum. Each question represents a different level of difficulty; each higher level requires cognitive processes not involved in answering questions at levels below. The scale has been validated and the curriculum used successfully with normal, urban, Polynesian children
