Current research into cognitive mapping processes is used to study the cognitive mapping features of Micronesian navigation systems, said bu Hage (1978) to be mnemonics for a large body of cultural myth and knowledge, rather than sea route-finding devices. This chapter discusses the definitional appropriateness of these systems as cognitive maps, their effectiveness as spoken versions of star courses, their role in navigational instruction, and their association with other aspects of Puluwatese voyaging
