Isi artikel
This paper examines certain aspects of thinking which are determined by social factors. It does this by distinguishing between what we think and how we think and comes to the conclusion that society determines the focus or content of thinking but not how we think. Some forms of cognition, eg., believing, knowing, awareness, etc., are considered to ilustrate this point and to show that they are formally the same. The second part of the paper discusses two ecological myths to show how religious changes in prehistoric Tonga gave rise to certain "systems of thought." This section also discusses a study of self-concept conducted by a social psychology class at the 'Atenisi Institute in Tonga in 1978. The paper concludes with the somewhat unpleasant recognition that in the context of social action people are rarely directed by a desire for truth but are, most of the time, motivated by utility, fashion, and irrational aims.
