Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder resulting from a congenital deficiency in either factor VIII or factor IX. As the 21st century approaches, recent major advances in diagnostic techniques and replacement factor theraphy are already in use; yet, at a time when the cure for hemophilia is rapidly becoming more probable than possible, we still grapple with issues of optimal arid cost-effective care of both the disease and its complications. This article discusses the past, present, and future of the diagnosis and therapy. Therapeutic dilemmas and strategies most pertinent to the treatment for hemophilia in 1996 are explored also
