Abstract
This paper proposes a new sampling scheme for the design of stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) radar. Our proposition is that given any impulse waveform, there will be an optimum frequency sampling scheme, according to minimum mean error criteria. The optimum scheme implies that the frequency spacing will generally non-uniform, where the uniform scheme is a special case that is achieved when the number of the sample is large. Based on the principle of equipartition of the energy, we present an algorithm to determine sampling scheme for any given impulse waveform. A monocycle pulse is used as an example of the proposed sampling scheme and to compare its performance with the uniform one. Simulation results for a 0-2048 MHz SFCW system verify the proposition, which leads into the possibility of new SFCW radar designs.
