Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that has increased significantly and is expected to reach 438 million people by 2030. Various interventions have been carried out, one of them by replacing sugary drinks with coffee. Decaffeinated coffee was believed to have protective effect against type 2 diabetes mellitus, although it was not widely known yet. The objective of the literature study was to gain information about protective factors and mechanisms of decaffeinated coffee on type 2 diabetes mellitus. Sources of this study originated from various books and scientific journals concerning experimental research, cohort, literature study, and abstract dated from 2000 up to 2013 with keywords type 2 diabetes mellitus, decaffeinated coffee, and coffee. From the result of the literature study, mechanisms of decaffeinated coffee as protective factor against type 2 diabetes mellitus were obtained. The author therefore concluded that consumption of decaffeinated coffee has protective factor against type 2 diabetes mellitus. |
