Abstract
It’s known that colored text in readings can increased learning concentration. This kind of text can increase learning concentration by increasing Visual Short-term Memory. Sample from this research was taken from Atma Jaya’s medical students from the first preclinical year, class of 2013. Sample was taken by using convenience sampling method. Medical students who were participating in this research were instructed to read 3 readings which contains approximately 335 words each in 3 minutes. And then, they were instructed to answer a 300 words-questionnaire at the end of each readings in 3 minutes. The 3 readings consists of common reading with all black color font (reading A) as control reading, black-colored font reading with orange-colored key words (reading B), and black-colored font reading with green-colored key words (reading C). Each reading will be called by reading A, reading B, and reading C. Reading B and Reading C were the experiment readings. The average value of reading B or reading C were being compared with reading A using Wilcoxon test. Research results shows that reading B got the highest average value. Wilcoxon test shows that there’s no significant relationship between average value of reading A and reading B (p = 0,678) and there’s significant relationship between average value of reading A and reading C (p = 0,010) but average value of reading B is smaller than reading A. Thus, it can be concluded that reading colored words in medical readings will not increase medical students’ learning concentration.
