Because knowledge gained from the postmortem examination can contribute significantly to understanding the patient’s antemortern medical condition, the autopsy remains a valuable part of medical care. This article emphasizes the importance of the postmortem examination to pediatrics. Insight into aspects that may impede consent for autopsy are presented, as are suggestions for obtaining consent. Important measures to take in ensuring that autopsy information is helpful for both the family and physician are identified.
