Despite its name, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) also is encountered in children. Pathogenic mechanisms and characteristics of lung injury seem to be the same in children as adults. Increased capillary permeability edema resulting from inflammatory cells and their mediators is a hallmark of ARDS. Therapies are directed at improving tissue oxygenation and supporting various organ functions.
