The overall goal of orthopedic management of cerebral palsy is early detection when simple and more effective treatment options are available. This article describes the musculoskeletal examination, gait analysis, and radiologic assessment used to detect orthopedic problems. Interventions—including orthotics, casting, and surgery—are described for hip dislocation, hamstring contractures, tendo achilles contracture, and spinal deformity. The use of the new procedure or dorsal rhizotomy is also defined.
