Abstract
The main focus of the paper is to argue that the translation process of Indonesian texts that include implicit expressions embodied in emphatic particles must include a preliminary step that deals with decoding them in the source language. The study upon which the paper is based was designed to answer how best to secure equivalent effect in the translation of pragmatic inferences embodied in emphatic particles and how translators may assess the effective background of texts that are based on intentionally unarticulated forms of expressions that are a key feature of Indonesian emphatic particles. A corpus of Jakarta Indonesian conversation was established and analyzed to extract typical implicit expressions where emphatic particles kok, lho, sih, dong, deh and lah are used regulary in the Indonesian conversation. Results indicated that corresponding English equivalents of Indonesian conversation. Result indicated that corresponding English equivalents of Indonesian emphatic particles varied depending on syntactic location and speaker involvement in the emphatic particles used in the speech situations analysed. A translator will need to depend not only upon conventional linguistic support that helps disclose relevant representations of the implicit, but also language corpora.
