Abstract
Background: Skeletal muscle is a dynamic tissue. Its development and regeneration processes are influenced by various growth factors. There are many opinions on how the number and diameter of muscle fiber changes during developmental period. The total number of skeletal muscle fibers has traditionally considered unchanged.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an increase in the number and diameter of skeletal muscle fiber in the rats of 3 different age groups. It is assumed that with age increase, there will be increment of the number and diameter of skeletal muscle.

Methods and Material: Subjects are male Sprague-Dawley rats, divided into 3 age groups: 1-4 days (A), 3-4 months (B), and 12-16 months (C). Gastrocnemius and soleus muscle was chosen as each represent different types of skeletal muscle. Slides were made and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Microphotographs were analysed using Digimizer Image Analyzer.

Results: Mean number of muscle fiber from gastrocnemius muscle are 3127±68, 10766±380, and 11867±387, from soleus muscle are 307±15, 2866±281, and 2936±162 for the group A, B, and C, respectively. Mean diameter of muscle fiber from gastrocnemius muscle are (5.64±0.12) µm, (22.14±1.31) µm, and (38.61±1.16) µm, from soleus muscle were (5.42±0.9) µm, (21.11±1.21) µm, and (27.67±0.89) µm for the group A, B, and C, respectively.

Conclusion: The number and diameter of skeletal muscle fiber is increase according to age.
