Abstract
Dyslipidemia is an important key contributory factor for cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in 30% of Indonesia. Red Yeast Rice (Monascus purpureus) has been used as an alternative therapy for dyslipidemia. RYR is composed of unsaturated fatty acids, ergosterol, amino acids, flavonoids, alkaloid, trace element, and natural statins monacolin K, which has the same chemical structure as lovastatin. Lovastatin inhibits HMG-coA reductase, an enzyme that is important in synthesizing cholesterol in the body.
The combined study results (5850 participants) showed significant reduction of serum total cholesterol levels, triglycerides levels, LDL-cholesterol levels and raised HDL-cholesterol by RYR treatment compared with placebo. The treatment duration was 4 weeks until 4 years. The incidence of adverse events did not differ between the RYR and statin group.
RYR preparations are to be recommended as one of the alternative treatments for dyslipidemia.
