Bromelain is a liquid extract of the plant, stems or fruit of pineapple (Ananas comosus). In human body bromelain reacts to various systems, which prevent the formation of edema, lowering fibrinogen concentraion in the blood, helping fibrinolysis, plasmin activation, preventing platelet aggregation, preventing the attachment of platelets to the endothelial walls of blood vessels. In some studies suggest that bromelain works by lowering levels of ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and also lower prostaglandine E2 and thromboxane A2. In this literature will be discussed how the mechanisms of bromelain on inhibiting platelet aggregation in atherosclerotic disease. The results of several studies found the optimal levels of bromelain and ADP that can be inhibited by bromelain. Therefore, bromelain can be used as an alternative therapy to overcome the complications of thrombosis of cardiovascular disease. |
