Abstract
Vitamin C is a nutrient needed by humans. It helps several bodily functions such as accelerating wound healing, and enhancing our immune system. Despite its importance, humans need to obtain vitamin C from external sources as it cannot be biosynthesized internally. The consumption of vitamin C supplements is increasingly becoming popular especially amongst those in mid-high socio-economic class. It is suspected that generally this group of people have obtained sufficient vitamin C from the foods they consume daily. Thus, it is hypothesized that there may be a futile waste of money for vitamin C supplements amongst this group of people. The target of this research is to find out the amount of money used for supplementation of vitamin C and to gain insights on the amount of possible monetary savings if the consumption of vitamin C is done rationally. We have adopted the descriptive method using cross-sectional interview for this research. Every respondent will be interviewed about their vitamin C consumption and the fruits that they consume one day before the interview. They will also be asked about their expenditure on vitamin C supplements. From the data obtained from the research, it is known that the median amount spent on vitamin C supplements are Rp 58.013,00. It was also found that the median amount spent on vitamin C by respondents who already fulfill their vitamin C RDA requirements from the fruits that they consume 1 day before, is Rp 53.012,82. It can also be concluded that there is no significant difference in the vitamin C requirements between those who consume it and those who do not.
