Isi artikelThis paper presented an application or program, which was named as smart matrix Braille in teaching English vocabulary for blind students. The learning process using digital modul needed laboratory facility completed with a set of computer and matrix Braille hardware. The aim of this application usage was to help blind students in English learning process, especially vocabulary, either in vocabulary introduction or its pronunciation. The wider aim was to develop sentence. This program was aimed to create more creative and innovative teaching and learning process. This instrument consisted of three important components such as PC, microcontroller MCS51, and selenoid. In the PC, there were dictionary software to converse Indonesian into English, microcontroller MCS 51 to change the letters into coding that could be read in microcontroller, and in the microcontroller, it was conversed in order to be used in solenoid in applying Braille letters. In solenoid reading, there were two Braille characters, the one would be used as letter direction, and another as index. Generally, the work of this program in vocabulary teaching was presenting grammatical pattern written by teacher, then such words were present in the students’ Braille board. For example, the teacher wrote the words of “ocean”, such word would be displayed in Braille form in each students’ Braille board. This program could help students to know a phonological unit for a certain vocabulary and could be used to practice its pronunciation. The writer hoped that this application could be recommendation for the decision maker of language teaching for blind students by using innovative media. key words: media, matrix, vocabulary
