This aim of this research was to (1) identify the major perceptual learning styles preferences, (2) identify the level of descriptive writing proficiency, and (3) analyze the correlation between perceptual learning styles preferences and descriptive writing proficiency. This research was conducted at Khairun University and STKIP Kie Raha in Ternate to 67 students of English department as the samples who were selected purposively. The data were collected by using Reid’s (1987) PLSP questionnaire and a test on three paragraph written essay. The data were analyzed by using SPSS ver.16 for Windows into descriptive statistic analysis and Spearmen rho correlation analysis. The results of the research indicated that (1) the major perceptual learning styles preferences are visual (mean=39.70), kinesthetic (mean=39.07), and tactile (mean=37.88), (2) their writing proficiency level belongs to sufficient category (level 2), and (3) there is not significant correlation between perceptual learning styles preferences and writing proficiency in which the correlation is very weak (p > 0.05; r = 0.00-0.199).
