Isi artikelThis study attempts to identify grammatical collocation errors in English writing by Indonesian students. Data for the study were collected from students’ English writing. They have been studying English for three years at the English Department. The students were asked to write a two- to three-page essay on an assigned topic. A total of 48 grammatical collocation errors—both inter-lingual and intra-lingual errors—were identified in the students’ writing. Grammatical collocational errors that were identified fall into two broad categories, i.e. G5 (combination of adjective + preposition), G8g (verbs + verb –ing), and G8s (intransitive verbs followed by a predicate noun or by a predicate adjective). The findings suggest direct teaching of collocations is a must. Teachers should make the students are of the importance of collocations in order to produce acceptable collocation in English.
