When communicating by e-mail, not all errors in the e-mail sentences are apparent to the addressee. In fact, the sentences that seem superficially well-formed contain errors that lure the reader to grasp the meaning which is the opposite of what the writer intends to communicate. This fact shows that the misinterpretation impedes effective communication. With respect to the problem above, this research analyses how errors may or may not hinder effective communication by e-mail in terms of covert errors (i.e. errors that are superficially well-formed but not meaning what the e-mail writer intended to mean) and overt errors (i.e. errors that are superficially deviant). The scope of the study is limited to the analysis of errors, not mistakes in thirty business e-mails written in English by four Indonesian engineers in Jakarta. To conduct the research, the four steps in conducting Error Analysis (EA) from Ellis (1994) and Ellis and Barkhuizen (2005) were employed. Especially when applying the step of error identification in the corpus, the researcher used the interpretations from the engineers to detect both the covert and overt errors. Three examples that describe each type of error in the Discussion section were randomly selected. When conducting the step of error evaluation, two Indonesian judges were asked to determine the errors that hinder the reader’s understanding. The study reveals that effective communication can clearly be impeded by both covert and overt errors which cause either the misinterpretation or incomprehensibility of the e-mail messages
