Isi artikel
Budiati 2009: Most of the teaching of English that takes place round Indonesia is done by teachers who share the mother tongue (Indonesian) of their monolingual classes. The use of the mother tongue in EFL classroom can be a valuable resource if it is used at appropriate times and in appropriate ways. There are a number of good reasons why teachers may use the mother tongue as a resource: 1).To help produce learner-generated materials, 2).To encourage learners to notice the similarities and differences between the two languages, 3).To encourage spontaneity and fluency, 4) To allow learners to get words and expressions they really need in English, 5).To facilitate group dynamics, 6). To get ongoing feedback. The course is intended for beginners who have knowledge of English but they still feel discouraged using their English. The paper writer found out that Cerita Anak and some poems in Ruang Kita (taken from Kompas, Sunday newspapers) could be especially valuable for creating communicative activities. If learners work with texts that are central to their lives (here, Indonesian poems or Indonesian short stories ) that are central to their lives then they are more able to get ideas they want in English.
