The research, entitled Communication Strategies Used by Non-Native English Speaker in Native English Speakers Environment (A Case Study in Expatriate Environment in Semarang), has one objective; to find out the kinds of communication strategies used by a non-native English speaker to native English speakers. Cook (1995:119) states that an L2 researcher of communication strategies (henceforth CS) divides CS into two categories, they are sociolinguistically oriented researchers and psycholinguistically oriented researchers. In this research, the researcher strives to combine those two paradigms by sociolinguistically analyze the strategies used by a non-native English speaker who holds different cultural background with native English speakers and psycholinguistically analyze the linguistic features that innately occur in the conversation. The subject of this study is five people talking about Indonesia and friendship; they are Danu Prayoga, Dean McCoy, Ed Harris, Dave Mcclain, and Burt Arnolds. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the non-native English speaker uses all communication strategies in the conversation. Of all of the kinds of communication strategy used, four are considered dominant. They are Language Switch, Message Abandonment, Topic/Semantic Avoidance, and Changing Code. The result shows that the communication strategies are mostly used as “waiting time” to prolong time, to think and to recall the next words to convey meaning in conversation.
