As in the world there are various languages, the cultures influencing them are also countless; meanwhile, in the world becomes more and more borderless due to the development of information technology. However, since not all people have mastered English as the lingua franca in the international communication, translation from English into other languages including Indonesian is still important. Again as language cannot be separated from culture, in translating, this cultural aspect should be given attention to. This paper intends to find out the cultural constraints in translating one of the English figurative languages i.e. metonymies whose definition is “using one entity to refer to another that is related to” (Lakoff and Johnson 1980:35). The data will be taken from the novel The Sands of Time by Sidney Sheldon and its Indonesian translation. There are two aspects observed, first, the form, i.e. the English expressions and the Indonesian ones, and second is the English meaning and the Indonesian translation. The differences in choosing form and meaning are compared and analysed according to their cultures.
