The unfortunate position of English in Indonesia, that is as a foreign language, causes the use of this language becomes very limited. In Indonesia, English is used only when practices are given to the students. It is different from English as a second language (ESL) where this language is used both as a medium of instruction at school and as one of the lingua franca in daily life of the students. At schools, the four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—are not taught in balance. The presentation of the four language skills seems to depend upon the preference of the teacher in a class or the preference of the textbook writers. Observing the classroom activities, teachers focus more on the teaching of language structure attached to speaking and reading activities. The limitation of the use of English as the target language makes it difficult for the students to practice their English. The students use English only in the classroom and sometimes the teachers of English—because of their lack of confidence to use English--still use the Indonesian language in the classroom. This paper discusses the factors that may influence the teaching of writing in English. These include (1) the position of English, (2) the differences of the language systems between Indonesian and English, (3) the age of the learners, (4) curriculum, and (5) teaching and learning
