Isi artikelEnglish as a foreign language (EFL) learning process in foreign countries like Indonesia faces difficulties as students are not able to practice the target language authentically. People around them do not speak the target language (L2). Therefore, they can only speak with their friends and teachers, which is not challenging for them as they can speak in the first language (L1). One of efforts to make students get authentic communication experience, a research project using online game in Second Life where people from all over the world can meet and communicate, was conducted to investigate the EFL learning process in a multi-user virtual environment (which is more familiar as online games), involving four students of Universitas Islam Indonesia. The research found that EFL learning process in MUVE happens in four stages; EFL learners get inputs from avatar-represented people and the virtual environment; the inputs are then processed for use in communication or stored in the human mind; learners experienced speech mastery or failure experiences, which will affect their speaking self efficacy; and when learners find difficulties, they can always refer to the virtual community and the virtual environment for help.
