Isi artikel
From the very onset of the English teaching process, students of English Department are usually intensively and systematically taught based on the principle of “one” variety of English. Nothing could be blamed for such a “monolithic” policy as the smooth transition to the mastery of the target language becomes the main goal. Despite the advantages of encouraging the smooth process of the mastery of English as the target language, such a standpoint, however if excessively taken, might close students’ access to the world’s natural living varieties of English in the real world of communication. This paper argues that at some point, presumably at some point whereby the rules of the English grammar is mostly mastered and students’ on-going process of mastery of the target language is not at stake, students should be familiarized with existing varieties of English. As a case in point some excerpts containing varieties of English are exemplified.
