Isi artikelIn a communication act, a speaker tells what he/she or someone else said or thought as well as what they did physically. This paper discusses the way someone tells the verbal acts, especially in the narrative discourse. In real communication, it is usually done by using a direct or indirect speech. However, a writer of the narrative fiction often manipulates the normative way of telling the verbal act to achieve certain effects. The deviations as a result of manipulating the direct and indirect speech are called free direct discourse and free indirect discourse. Certain linguistic expressions such as tense forms, pronouns, and temporal or spatial expressions can be used to identify the deviations. By using a narratology, it can be found that some effects resulted from the deviations are (i) to show a certain view point; (ii) to control the distance between a reader and characters in a story; and (iii) to build the stylistic effects
