Textbooks and other printed materials have been used for years for the teaching of reading in SMA. As technology develops, nowadays, computer can be used to support the teaching of reading. CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) is one of programs that can be used to teach reading. This research is done to find out how effectively CALL can improve SMA students’ reading comprehension, the advantages and disadvantages of using CALL in comparison to textbooks or printed materials and also to find out how well CALL improves students’ autonomous learning. The subject of this study was year 2 of SMA. This study used quasi-experimental method. There were two groups of subject to compare, the control group and the experimental group. The control group was treated using textbook and the experimental group was treated using CALL. Before they were given treatments, they were assessed to see whether they have the same level of English competence. After several treatments they were given posttests to see the effect of the treatment on the students’ reading comprehension and autonomous learning. Before the tests were administered to the control and experimental group, the tests were firstly piloted to see its validity and reliability. Questionnaires were given to them to find out whether CALL has advantages and disadvantages and also whether CALL improves their autonomous learning. Further interviews were given to this group to dig more information about the benefits of CALL for the students.
