Isi artikel
Code switching has been an ?unmarked' phenomenon for a multilingual society. In Indonesia , such a phenomenon has been popular among the community, especially for elite people. This article is mainly aimed at finding out the aspects underlying and governing such lingustic behaviour. In more specific sense, the article has been designed to find out both the linguistic features and the socio-pragmatic functions of Indonesian/English code switching. The data comprise about 750 switching discourses taken from about 250 respondents who reside in metropolitan cities such as Jakarta , Bandung , Semarang , Jogyakarta Surabaya and Makassar . They were recorded in four speech events; seminars, meetings, dialogues on TV and chitchats. Moreover, the study also employs questionnaires which are mainly designed to find out the motivation or reasons for the respondents to switchcode. The study reveals that nouns are found to be the most dominant switched segment comprising more than three fourth of the data. Anova Friedman test confirms that this pattern is found to be the same in the four speech events. This indicates that switching between Indonesian and English is more likely to occur in minor constituents eg., within the phrasal and lexical level boundary rather than in major constituents commonly known as intersentential code switching. From the socio-pragmatic point of view, the study finds that respondents switching their code from Indonesian to English are mostly motivated by the need to make the message much clearer and as such it facilitates a smooth and clear communication among the interactants. Moreover, codeswitching to some extents can also be used as a medium to announce the respondent's eliticism in order to have a self-recognition and admiration from the community where they belong. Also, codeswitching can be used to neutralize messages which appear to be socially and culturally unacceptable when they are uttered in Indonesian language. Thus, it is concluded that Indonesian/English code switching has a wide range of socio-pragmatics functions employed by the elite people to allocate their interactional goals.
