sharp injuries are the most common work-related injuries inflicting healthcare workers, and may result in the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus and hepataitis C virus. Transmission of virus depends on the status of the source patient, the volume of blood transferred, the severity of te puncture wound and the type of device that caused the injury. Sharp injuries may result in significant cost to the healthcare institution. This article addresses the various methods used to seccessfully decrease the rates of sharp injuries.
