Formal medical education devotes little, if any, time to the study of the provision of care within a multicultural setting. This article gives an overview of the practices, customs, and communication styles of various ethnocultural groups in the United States and Canada. It is hoped that the reader will examine his or her own beliefs and devise an approach to the patient that will incorporate quality care, while showing respect for the patient’s cultural beliefs and practices.
