Despite the low prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Aceh province, many factors are regarded relevant for implementing intervention program for preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS for young people in Aceh. In post tsunami and post conflict in Aceh many children and young people lost and separated from their parents, and lacking of parental guidance. Besides, the arrival of humanitarian workers from other provinces and countries to revitalize and reconstruct Aceh, brought in children and young people to learn new life styles that may not be practiced before the disaster. As consequences, children and young people are vulnerable and at risk for drug abuse and sexual practices. Also, for economic reasons it is possible for young girl to involve in prostitution. In relations to that, it is regarded urgent to engage educational and promotional program that can prevent children and young people from the spread of HIV/AIDS. The main objective of this study is to assess the needs of prevention program on HIV/AIDS for young people' in Aceh that are appropriate with the local characteristics. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and series of focus group discussion with related local government, religious and community leaders, NGOs activists, groups of young people, and parents in Banda Aceh and Meulaboh. Based on the result of needs assessment, a life- kills education approach of intervention program for preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS was developed. Including in this intervention program are five main aspects of character building, i.e.: self-awareness, responsibility, achievement oriented, creative and critical thinking, and integrity and respect to others. |
